Discover the Power of One: Make Your Life Count

"Discover the Power of One: Make Your Life Count" by Dr. Michael Youssef is an inspiring and encouraging book which I have not yet finished reading.

From: "Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Discover the Power of One: Make Your Life Count"
"This book has taught me aspects of the Bible that were unknown to me, as a person who is trying to learn the way to know God. Dr. Youssef is brilliant in the way he presents his lessons, combining Biblical passages with aspects of modern life. This is a must-read for anybody who wants to improve the knowledge of The Bible, as a way to develop an intimate relationship with God. "

What
I believe leads to a life that has great potential for genuine fulfillment,
forgiveness, and eternal life. What's so good about what you believe?

I read this today:

From "Discover the Power of One" by Michael Youssef, PhD

"...The world in which we live is established on false beliefs and
anti-Christian values, but it's a materially excellent world. Can such a
luxurious world be so bad? Can things that make you feel so good be wrong?

Just as Daniel and his friends eventually concluded, we must conclude that
the pleasure and opulence of the world are a facade. The environment underneath
the surface enticements is an environment that is hostile to Christ, not just
indifferent to Christ. Although the world demands tolerance from Christians, the
world isn't tolerant of Christians! The world insists that Christians become
less judgmental, less righteous, less of their faith and their relationship with
God, less certain of their evaluations of right and wrong. The pressure is often
intense to become less Christian-- never is the pressure of the world to become
more pure, more faithful or moral.

The glitz and glamour and bright lights of the world might blind a person
temporally. The offer of pleasure may seem genuine and overpowering at times.
But underneath is the seamy side of sin. It is a side the devil never shows
right away--the side that leads to decay, destruction, and death. Sin doesn't
reveal its hard edge initially, but the edge is always there. In Babylon, things
may have appeared pleasurable and pleasant for the young captives, but
underneath the surface was evil intent.

......We are called as Christians to challenge what other people hold as the
status quo and the 'politically correct' belief. We are called as Christians to
challenge any opinion or belief that does not exalt the Lord!

Rather than roll over and play dead when others criticize you for believing
in God and advocating a godly way of living, rise up and say, 'What's so good
about what you as a non-Christian believe? What I believe leads to a life of
inner peace, purpose, joy, and satisfaction. What I believe leads to a life that
has great potential for genuine fulfillment, forgiveness, and eternal life.
What's so good about what you believe?""

The Christian Family by Larry Christenson - "The best I have ever read on the subject." -- David Wilkerson

From http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Family-Larry-Christenson/dp/087123114X

Product Description
America's Favorite Book on the Family

Over 1,215,000 copies of The Christian Family have been sold in the United States alone since the first edition was published in 1970. And it has been translated into nine other languages!

Why such popularity?

Perhaps some of the many favorable comments the book has received through the years will answer that question:

"The Christian Family takes the time to explain God's plan for the family and how He intends that it be carried out."

Pulpit Helps

"The best I have ever read on the subject."

David Wilkerson

"If there is a better book on the subject, I haven't read it."

David Otis Fuller

"He encourages parents to exercise their priesthood and presents an abundance of ways to enrich daily family worship."

Catholic New Covenant

"The author manifests a sound grasp of biblical principles, a sympathetic understanding of human nature, and insight into the spirit of the present age."

Understanding People by Larry Crab

Understanding People by Larry Crab

My parents are letting me borrow this book and the preface talks about Biblical Counseling and whether the Bible is helpful for our problems. It almost sounds like Doug Hudgins wrote it. :)

A review of "None Dare Call It Education: What's Happening to Our Schools & Our Children?" (a favourite of Marlana's):
Extremely well-documented book! A must-read!!, June 27, 2001
By ....(Florida) - See all my reviews
This is an extremely well-documented, fact-filled book exposing the deplorable condition of our public school system. I don't see how anyone can argue with the facts---the book is loaded with quotes from those in the educatinal system and excerpts from public school books / curriculum, and he sites each source. I highly recommend it...in fact, I have loaned my copy out to at least 12 people and every one of them, without exception, loved the book...most of them purchased their own copy after reading mine. The information contained in this book will scare you, especially if you have children in the public schools. Unfortunately, most parents have no idea what is really going on in their child's school---this book is a "wake-up call!" Once you begin reading, you won't be able to put it down.

When You Rise Up: A Covenantal Approach to Homeschooling

A review of "When You Rise Up: A Covenantal Approach to Homeschooling":

Encouragement for Godly Education, April 2, 2005 This book sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally decided to read it last night. I had heard great things from people in my church and from friends abroad; further, I had met Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr. last November at an event in San Antonio. This was the time, I reckoned, to explore his views on the growing practice of home education.

I was impressed with Dr. Sproul's humble, cogent manner of argumentation. It is very apparent, not only from the illustrations he uses but also from what I have heard about him, that he LIVES what he teaches. If you desire to learn about the Scriptural commands of parental training, read this book. Agree or disagree with him, this is an excellent summary.

Furthermore, Dr. Sproul is not content to make a simple, half-hearted statement about the value of home education. He rejects pragmatism and all forms of unbiblical reasoning by forcing the issue: "By what standard?" His answer: Scripture alone. Dr. Sproul successfully shows the importance of teaching children with a lifestyle-based methodology geared to instill multigenerational, covenantal faithfulness. His views are decidedly reformed, even -- dare I say -- Van Tillian, which adds to the appeal in my mind.

In short: This book does not merely summarize the growing "home schooling movement." It seeks to praise the good, critique the questionable, redirect the wayward, motivate the weary, and instill vision within the faithful. For his efforts, I highly commend Dr. Sproul.

It's one of Marlana's favorite books and I'd like to read it. She has it on one of her bookshelves
